 How To Green My Home

There are simple things you can do to green your home and your life. Below are some things you can do today to get you started.

  1. Turn off the water when you are not using it directly. For example: When you wash your dishes, or get a drink of water, or brush your teeth, turn the water off between uses.
  2. Place insulation barriers behind all outlets and switch plates. This will reduce minimize wasted electricity and can lower your utility bill.
  3. Compost vegtable and fruit scapes, along with used coffee and tea grounds. The soil created by this is very rich in nutrients and can be used the following spring for potting new flowers, vegtables, and herbs.
  4. Recycle your plastic bags at your local grocery. Use cloth bags when possible to reduce the amount of plastic bags used. Plastic is made from oil and gasoline is made from oil.  The more plastic we use, the more it cost us at the pump. Reducing our plastic consumption can help reduce our energy cost.
  5. Recycle your batteries at your local office store. Batteries are filled with carcinogens (cancer causing agents). Throwing these into the trash, goes into our landfills, and can contaminate our water supply.
  6. BYOB - Bring your own bottle to work, school, and play. Wash and reuse your water bottle, rather than buying new.
  7. Turn out the lights, computer, tv, and radio when you are not in the room.
  8. Unplug appliances when they are not being used. Turning them off is still using about 20-25% of energy because it keeps them in a "stand-by" operational mode. Off does not mean off. Unplugged means off.
  9. Leave your shoes at the door. 90% of the pollution in your home is brought in by your shoes.
  10. If you must use candles to enhance or elevate your mood, use soy based candles. Other candles are made from paraffin wax which is made from petroleum products (oil - see # 4 above regarding oil use), and can be high in VOC's (volatile organic compounds) and carcinogens (cancer causing agents).
